someday

today’s young bride will someday sit with the older women
at the prayer-gatherings. not on the floor but on chairs
and stools hastily put next to the stairs already taken
as they discuss their aching knees and other such cares

today’s young son-in-law will someday be amongst
the elders of the family with his long beard going white
his consent in the family’s matters will be a must out of respect
for the authority of the wise wrinkles around his patient eyes

and maybe a young son or daughter will look upon them
and see them differently for once from across the room
and wonder - in a way unprecedented - what they were like when
they were young and unsure – a newly-wed bride and groom
