neutral buoyancy

i lie in bed with a book next to me scratching a crease on it’s spine
i fill my lungs with air and try in vain to rise

i hold my breath but then give up, it just won't do:
an unsuccessful fin pivot

i’m lonely not because you’ve abandoned me, you did that long ago
it’s because i am finally letting go

abandoning the idea of you
by which i've been beset
