it is late, dear

we sit still and yet
the crows watch   and are wary
ready any moment to fly
you sit two feet away and yet
i can’t even touch   you anymore
can i?

i look into your eyes and i look away
those eyes i so adored
i look at your lips and they seem to be
strangers once more
good only to say words to me
while mine tingle with their memory
so loud i can’t even hear what you say
was it to sit, for a while to stay?

and slowly the hour of coffee now gives way
to the hour of the bats
and if i sit now i’ll have to stay
and i can ill afford that
we knew the time, we knew the days
but nothing’s bringing them back

now i stare across the vast space at you
unbridgeable. you right here and yet unreachable
and  i slowly gather up, like seeds scattered at out feet
the burden of another memory unbearable
for twenty minutes of joy bitter sweet

and you two feet   away
yet like the crows somehow distant
they with their beady eyes
and their black wings to carry them
wings as dark as my heart is today
what with you two feet
and a lifetime away
